Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown took to Twitter on Thursday ahead of what could be an eventful offseason for him:
After sitting out the Steelers’ Week 17 game against the Cincinnati Bengals following a reported argument with quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, Brown’s future with the team is in question.
Following the season, Steelers President Art Rooney II told Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that it’s “hard to envision” Brown remaining with the organization given how the campaign ended.
He added:
“There’s not much we can do right now; we have time to make a decision. We’ll look at all the options. We’re not going to release him; that’s not on the table. But I will say all other options are on the table. Whether the situation can be reconciled and have him back on the team next year, we’re a long way away from thinking that can happen. We’re not closing the door on anything at this point.”
If Pittsburgh trades Brown, he will still count for $21,120,000 against the salary cap in 2019, but Rooney suggested it won’t stop the organization from dealing him if a viable offer comes through.
Hall of Famer Jerry Rice recently said that Brown wants to join the San Francisco 49ers “really bad” after speaking with him.
The 30-year-old Brown has long been one of the NFL‘s top wideouts, and he has put up Hall of Fame-caliber numbers during his nine-year career. He has been named to the Pro Bowl the past six seasons, and he has caught 100 or more passes in six straight campaigns as well.
In 2018, Brown finished with 104 receptions for 1,297 yards and an NFL-high 15 touchdowns. While he was productive, he finished second on the Steelers to 22-year-old JuJu Smith-Schuster in both catches (111) and receiving yards (1,426).
With Smith-Schuster emerging as a No. 1 threat in his own right, it may be a bit easier for the Steelers to part ways with Brown during the offseason.
